Stretch your neck

Your neck should be stretched first in chair yoga. By stretching your neck, you can lengthen it and make space between the cervical vertebrae. As you begin, stand straight and place your head in front of your spine. Try to feel the crown of your head lift. If you are uncomfortable, rest your head on the seat. Next, lower your right arm toward your right shoulder. Do not lift your left shoulder. You can do this on the other side.

The next step is to stretch your shoulders. You should be able to feel a stretch on your neck by rolling your shoulders back and forth. If the chair has an armsrest, you should be able reach the armrest with your hands. If you can't reach the armrest, try to reach toward the wall so that your knees are a little closer to your hands. Continue to hold for 2-3 minutes, then take a few more times.

Stretching your lower back

The back is the focus of chair yoga. This gentle exercise works the sides, shoulders, lower back and upper back. When performing a chair back stretch, hinge at the hips and bend your legs. This stretch is good for your shoulders and chest. Repeat the stretch on both sides, alternating the right and left side. Deeply inhale as you complete the pose. You can return to standing once you have completed three to five breathing cycles. Do the same on the opposite end.

The first chair yoga exercise is the triangle pose. Start by standing straight up, and then place your feet on the sides of the chair. Next, place your right arm behind you right knee. Take a few breaths and repeat on the other side. Another option is to bring the chair backwards instead of forward. This will strengthen your core, lower back, shoulders, and shoulders.
